The best alumni stories do more than list achievements. They show what can happen when preparation meets opportunity. Mason Russell’s path has already taken him from Queen Creek to national stages—and it began in a Casteel uniform.

A cornerstone of Casteel’s championship era

Russell lettered all four years for Coach Matt Denny and graduated in 2024 as one of the most decorated pitchers in program history. Across 41 varsity appearances and 155⅔ innings, the left-hander recorded a 2.52 career ERA and 201 strikeouts. His senior season sharpened that résumé: a 7–0 record, 2.02 ERA, and 78 strikeouts in 59 innings.

Those numbers came with the biggest wins in school history. Russell helped Casteel claim consecutive Arizona 5A state championships in 2023 and 2024. As a junior, he threw a no-hitter in the 2023 state semifinal—allowing one walk and striking out six—to help send the Colts toward their first championship. A year later, Casteel finished the repeat with an 8–1 title-game victory over Sunrise Mountain, with Russell throwing all seven innings and allowing one earned run.

A no-hitter on the national stage

In April 2024, Casteel traveled to Cary, North Carolina, for USA Baseball’s National High School Invitational. Against Wesleyan Christian Academy, Russell authored one of the event’s defining performances: six no-hit innings, 10 strikeouts, and only two walks in a 10–0 Casteel victory.

It was only the second no-hitter in NHSI history. MLB’s coverage noted that Russell mixed three pitches effectively and allowed just two baserunners all afternoon. The performance connected Casteel Baseball to one of the country’s premier high-school events and gave Russell a second no-hitter in a pressure setting after his 2023 state-semifinal gem.

National development and elite events

Russell’s national experience began before his senior year. USA Baseball’s player record connects him to the 2021 15U National Team Trials, where he pitched 4⅔ innings across two games, and lists him within its 16U/17U National Team Development Program pathway. He also competed for the Cincinnati Reds at the 2022 Area Code Underclass Games and the 2023 Area Code Games, and appeared at the 2023 Perfect Game National Showcase.

By the end of his prep career, Perfect Game ranked Russell as Arizona’s No. 3 overall prospect and No. 2 left-handed pitcher, as well as the nation’s No. 40 prospect and No. 6 left-hander. His senior honors included first-team All-Conference, All-City, All-District, All-Region, and All-State recognition. He also graduated with a 3.86 GPA.

The draft, Arizona, and the next chapter

The Cincinnati Reds selected Russell in the 20th round of the 2024 MLB Draft. He chose college baseball instead, joining the University of Arizona alongside his twin brother, Tyler. Before his freshman season, Baseball America named him the Big 12 Preseason Freshman of the Year.

Russell made seven appearances with one start in 2025, striking out nine over 7⅓ innings. He then showed a strong step forward in limited 2026 action. Across three relief appearances and four innings, he posted a 2.25 ERA, allowed only two hits, and struck out six—including all five batters he faced in 1⅔ innings against Omaha. An injury ended his sophomore season early.

Now the journey returns to the Valley. Grand Canyon announced Russell as a junior left-handed pitcher in its roster build for the 2027 season. He arrives at GCU after 10 Arizona appearances, 11⅓ innings, and 15 strikeouts—and with the same championship experience, national-event background, and competitive standard that shaped his Casteel career.

What the story represents

For Casteel players coming behind him, Russell’s story is a clear picture of what “For The Brand” can become: prepare with intention, compete when the moment gets bigger, represent the program nationally, and keep moving forward when the path changes. The uniforms have changed—from Casteel navy and gold, to Arizona colors, and now GCU purple—but the foundation travels with him.
