PREMIER COMPETITION
The Coach Bob National Invitational began in 2009 and grew into a major spring-break destination for high-school baseball. Perfect Game documented 105 teams from 11 states at 21 Valley host sites in 2014. Casteel’s 2027 entry will compete in the National Division.

THE TOURNAMENT NAMESAKE
Coach Bob Wienheimer coached baseball for more than 44 years. His career included head- and assistant-coaching work in New York and Ohio, service at Chandler High School from 1995–2003, and eight seasons at Boulder Creek from 2004 until his death in 2011.
Before coaching, Wienheimer pitched one professional season in the St. Louis Browns organization in 1949 and played collegiately at Marietta College. He later spent 25 years as a teacher and principal in Arizona’s Alhambra Elementary District, became a certified National Pitching Association instructor, and was inducted into the Arizona High School Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006.
TOURNAMENT FAQ
The tournament honors Bob Wienheimer, a teacher, school administrator, and baseball coach whose career spanned more than 44 years. He coached in New York, Ohio, Chandler, and Boulder Creek and was inducted into the Arizona High School Baseball Hall of Fame in 2006.
No. Bob Everett was a highly accomplished Arizona coach with seven state baseball championships, but the Coach Bob National Invitational is named for Bob Wienheimer. The two coaching legacies are sometimes confused.
The 2027 Coach Bob National Invitational runs March 18–26, 2027. Schedule details and participating teams will be added as they are finalized.
Casteel is scheduled to compete in the National Division, traditionally one of the event’s premier divisions.
The tournament has historically brought together teams from across Arizona and the country. In 2014, Perfect Game reported 105 teams from 11 states playing at 21 host sites.
Hosting games requires field preparation, concessions, hospitality, scorekeeping, staffing, and many other details. A 2024 AZPreps365 feature reported approximately 120 volunteers supporting Casteel’s tournament operation.

Casteel will host tournament action, while the broader event may use multiple high-school and college venues around the Valley. The final 2027 schedule will identify every location.
This is one of our largest events of the year and requires tremendous Booster Club involvement. Volunteer opportunities and planning will begin well in advance of March.
